Dear Sirs/Madam

We have received your invoice number 120202 date 22 December for 500,which is due for                     payment at the end of this mouth .

Unfortunately, Cargo ship sinks last week and destroyed a large part of a valuable consignment due        for delivery to a cash customer . Our calm is now with the insurance company , but it is unlikely to be met for another one or two mouth . Until then we are faced with a difficult financial problem .

I am hoping you will allow us to defer payment of your invoice until the end of January .

As you are aware, our accounts with you have always  been settled promptly, and we  hope you will be able to agree to this extension .
